Hot Earth - (1955)

Maori legend tells of the coming of the Arawas to the New Zealand coast and their journey into the territory of the unseen fires, where the land was warm and friendly. In Rotorua today the pakeha also uses natural steam for heating and cooking, and research into geothermal power may mean further wide developments in the area. For the first time we see how a geyser works, and trace the cycle of its building up and eventual sealing-off. The region has a great fascination for tourists, and the film concludes with a dramatic display of geyser activity. This NZ National Film Unit film is courtesy of Archives NZ, click HERE to vist the Archives NZ website.
