Von Tempsky is an iconic figure from the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s and was the leader of a company of Forest Rangers - an elite unit of bush fighters. He was killed during a battle in Taranaki against the Maori leader Titokowaru. His career was marked by scandal and controversy. He was a shameless self promoter but he remains one of the stand-out personalities of his times. |
